Paging Dr. David Satcher; America Needs You

Dr. David Satcher/AP photo

Paging Dr. David Satcher, the 16th U.S. Surgeon General, former Director of the CDC, Assistant Secretary for HHS, President of Meharry Medical College and humanitarian! Where is he? Can he speak to the public? The public needs to hear from a straight shooter who will not comprise his integrity with 'hypothetical' slight of words while hemming and hawing around the truth. Dr. Satcher's leadership wove honesty, healthcare, and humanity into a tightly threaded cord. He  educated Americans on the importance of the public being totally informed and cared about the welfare of all individuals.
The times were are in now are unprecedented in our history. And unrepresented times call steady stewardship and medical competency. But there is too much shuckin', jiving, sidestepping, and backtracking from those who are allowing their years of institutional knowledge to be folded up like a lawn chair after a picnic. And, their medical credibility is being used like a toy mouse for a trifling fat cat to dangle before the public. It is disappointing to watch the adults in the room literally sit in the corner hoping for the best while millions of American are being trying to do what is right by staying indoors to keep from spreading the virus. After millions watch exhausting press conferences that give conflicting medical information, the doctors run out night after night trying to explain on the COVID19 cable news cycle what should have been told to the public in layman turns at 5:00pm. Empty non binding phrases that are translated into "see what happened was" and  "what I meant to say" looped into 30 sec sound bites that are stretched well into the next morning round of talk shows. The elevated level of misinformation is proving to be deadly.
Whew! This is too much additional stress on a nation that is already feeling the effects of coronavirus fatigue! This is not to disparaged any doctor in particular. BUT doctors sharing information from a national platform during this pandemic words should carry weight, be truthful, and transparent. Americans need health experts who will not succumb to being political babysitters. Touting the medical expertise of Medical Doctors who are playing MDs for the press corp is medical malpractice at the least and criminal at the most when we see the daily number of deaths increasing in the United States and around the world. At what cost? Monetarily, emotionally and spiritual? The mental toll the pandemic is having on Americans will be felt for generations to come. We cannot allow a virus ratings to drive out a search for cure, compassion, care, and common sense. Public health officials, appointed, hired, or volunteering, must be held accountable for what they are telling the public in the role they are in without giving any agency of the government political covering. And the public and the media should all remind the doctors to do no harm. At this time, the misinformation and half truths are not only taking its toll mentally but is bad medicine being practiced in plain sight.

Soldiers Turned Songwriters to Perform at SAFE's Nashville Breakfast

SAFE, Soldiers and Families Embrace, is continuing to help active military men and women and veterans seek healing from the traumas of war. In September, SAFE paired Nashville songwriters with soldiers to share their stories through songs. On November 8 2013, a benefit concert was held for love ones and the public to hear the music that blood, sacrifice, and tears help produced.

On Friday, November 15, 2013, some of the songs will be performed again at SAFE's Nashville Breakfast. The SAFE Nashville's Breakfast will be held at Ben Folds’ Studio, 30 Music Sq. W. Ste. 310, Nashville, TN 37203 8:30 am.

One of the songs that will be performed at breakfast was co-written by Vietnam Veteran Bill Fritschler (sic), Jason Jones, and Keni Thomas, entitled "Unspoken."  The song expresses the pain of veterans and members of the military not being able to talk to their families about their war experiences. The song tells us about Bill's father's Silver Star, an award for valor in combat that Bill did not know his father had received in WWII until after Bill's father died. He and his mother never knew why or what had happened.  The three will share and sing the song.  Veteran David Bradley will also be there to share and sing his song, "Get a Hero Home."
More About the Performers

In the summer of 1993, Sergeant Keni Thomas was deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia with the 3rd Ranger Battalion as part of an elite special operations package called Task Force Ranger. Their mission was to find a capture a criminal warlord named Mohammed Farrah Aideed. On the 3rd of October, Keni and his fellow rangers distinguished themselves in an eighteen hour fire-fight that would later be recounted in the highly successful book and movie “Blackhawk Down”. Nineteen Americans gave their lives and 78 were wounded in the worst urban combat seen by US troops since WWII.

Jason Jones is the son of a Vietnam Veteran and has shared that he has been able to talk to his dad more since the retreat than ever before about his war experiences.

David Bradley is a veteran of Britain's Royal Air Force who donates a great deal of his time to veterans and their families and who personally recruited about a third of the songwriters who participated in the retreat and now the concert on Nov. 8.

More About Dr. Verla Vaughan

Colleagues and former students of Dr. Verla Marie Williams Vaughan will remember the longtime educator and administrator as an excellent role model, scholar, mentor and a very caring person who pushed her students to achieve at their highest potential.

Vaughan, a tenured professor of Nursing,  died Feb. 23 at age 64, taught at Tennessee State University for more than 36 years over which time she developed a reputation for being devoted to her job and her students.

Dr. Kathy Martin, Associate Dean in the College of Health Sciences and Executive Director of Nursing, with whom Vaughan worked for many years, called the late educator a leader in fostering excellence in education within the nursing profession.

“Throughout her career as a nurse educator, Dr. Vaughan served as a role model, scholar and mentor for nursing students and colleagues across all levels,” Dr. Martin said. “She exemplified the vital role that nurses play in improving the health of others especially in the area of diabetes management and improving health care disparities.”

Dr. Vaughan joined the faculty in the Division of Nursing in the former School of Nursing at TSU in 1977. In addition to teaching, she served in many capacities including coordinator of the RN-BSN degree-completion program, and interim director of the BSN program – all while serving in different nursing capacities at local hospitals.

Dr. Vaughan also served as the chair of the Christine Sharpe Lectureship series, an annual program that provides TSU nursing students and community leaders the opportunity to dialogue and exchange ideas with key nursing leaders from around the country.

Dr. Vaughan, who earned a B.S. degree in Psychology from TSU, received a master’s degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D., also in Nursing, from Texas Woman’s University.

She was married to Harry L. Vaughan, whom she met while the two were students at TSU. Her children are Sydney Kevin Aldridge, Jr., Tracey Dixon, Kimberly Vaughan and Harriet Wallace. She is also survived by three grandchildren, including Kayla Vaughan, Amber Quarles and Taniya Dixon.

Bridgett Evans O'Lannerghty with her daughter, Laura

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, tune in to hear from two friends on a journey to beat cancer. Listen as Bridgett Evans O'Lannerghty share with listeners her on going battle with cancer.  Bridgett, who has worked in the entertainment industry for over 33 years, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Inflammatory Breast Cancer in March 2012. After twelve rounds of chemo, a single mastectomy, additional chemo, and radiation she was pronounced free of cancer in November 2012. However, in January of 2013, cancer reared its ugly head once again as Stage 4 cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes.

Bridgett has many family, friends, and legions of fans who are praying for her to kick cancer's butt. Listen to one of her closest friends, Lisa Florian, share about the fundraiser, sponsored by hope-4-health, that will help raise money to defray the staggering cost of Bridgett's medical bills.

Join us as we continue to bring people and causes to the airwaves that are "Living and Giving" throughout the year. This show will empower, inspire, and motivate you to live your BEST life while helping others as well.

Living Your Best Life, a radio show that empowers, inspires and motivates one to live their BEST life, can heard on 760 AM in the Middle-Tennessee Region, military bases, and streamed live on U-Stream.TV from 9-10AM CST. This show will also be aired on WTST, a member of the HBCU radio network.

More About Bridgett's Financial Needs

After the loss of her job due a downturn in the economy, God blessed Bridgett with a new job shortly before her first diagnosis. This provided much needed income and health insurance just in time!

While health insurance covers a large portion of the medical expenses, the deductible and uncovered co-pays mounted into thousands of dollars over the first diagnosis before she was hit with the second diagnosis.

Additionally, being a single mother with two children in college is a struggle in and of itself.  Her employers have been very generous with her treatment schedule and are going far above and beyond what would be expected to assist her, but she has had to miss a lot of work due to treatment and hospital admissions, which is very stressful for her.

Her need for treatment is great, and her friends have rallied around her to form “Friends of Bridgett” to help with the medical costs. The motto of Friends of Bridgett is:

Call it a clan, call it a network,
call it a tribe, call it a family.
Whatever you call it, whoever you are,
you need one.
~Jane Howard
The first official fundraiser, sponsored by hope-4-health, began this week and runs through the end of May.

Bridgett's children:
Evan is a Junior at University of TN, Chattanooga and Laura Brennan is a Sophomore at St Louis University.

The first month of the New Year is usually filled with new resolutions that are often discarded after a few weeks. In 2013, let's jump start the new year by making small changes that will net big results that will help you be successful year long.

On Saturday, January 12, 2013, join us to hear from author, entrepreneur, fitness expert and Pastor, Jimmy L. Duggans, Jr,. as he shares essential tools to staying fit and healthy as a lifestyle. Duggans' book, Faith and Fitness After 40, approaches health care and exercise from a biblical foundation.  Duggans will talk about the three areas that he feels are necessary for optimum health benefits; resistance weight training, cardio, and nutrition.

Here why others believe Faith and Fitness After 40 "is about developing a lifestyle of fitness, it’s about bending and not breaking, learning how to enjoy yourself by maintaining good health all life long, and not for the sake of just looking good for a vacation. Fitness is more than just a passing fad, it’s a life-style, an avenue where one can vent their anger, and focus it in a positive direction."

This show will help you to take another look at exercise and fitness with keys to help you stay faith to working out year round.

Living Your Best Life can be heard on 760 AM in the Middle-Tennessee Region, military bases, and streamed live on U-Stream.TV from 9-10AM CST.

“Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Heb 11:1.

Many classify faith as a noun, when in actuality; it serves as both a noun and a verb. Faith and Fitness After 40 focuses on the noun and the verb, meshing the spirituality and the practicality of faith, health and fitness. As a Pastor, I have had many people come to me asking me to pray for preventable health issues, that cannot be solved by prayer alone. Why, because they have no intentions upon applying the corrective action to manifest their prayer request. Yes, faith without works is dead, but as it pertains to your health, faith without work(ing) out, equals death. Faith and Fitness After 40 will show us that the bible is not only a book of faith, but also a book of practical application to coincide with our belief in the word. Jesus paid a lofty price for us to be healthy and I pray this book will help us to begin to experience the health he desired for us to have.
