Join us Saturday, September 10, 2016, to hear from behind the scenes during #MarineWeek in Nashville. Hear from active duty Marines who are on the front line serving our country. They will sharing amazing stories about planning an event that has captivated not only Nashville and the Middle Tennessee Region but thousands who have traveled to see the world's strongest military force engaging with the community and glimpses of a day in the life of The Few, Proud.

The five-day free, public event kicked off with an opening ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Public Square Park in Nashville. Mayor Megan Barry, daughter of a Marine, gave opening remarks. There were also performances by Darryl Worley, Mike Corrado, Marine Band San Diego and the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. The crowds were mesmerized!

Tune in to hear 1st Lt. Johnny Henderson share his Marine story. Listen to why Nashville was chosen to host this wonderful event. We will hear highlights from this week and the exciting scheduled slated for Saturday, September 10 and Sunday's 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony.

Marine Week, hosted by the United States Marine Corps in one city per year, is a celebration of Community, Country and Corps – providing the American public the experience of directly connecting with hundreds of Marines.

From Sept. 7–11, Marine Week Nashville will feature hands-on static displays, live demonstrations, time-honored Marine Corps traditions, musical performances and other events to showcase the history, military capabilities and community involvement of the Corps.

On Saturday, January 30, 2016,  Professor of Accounting and Emeritus, Director of Owen Entrepreneurship Center at Vanderbilt, Germain Boer, will share how to stay focus if you have set goals to start a business or partnership this year. Often times, entrepreneurship can be a fearful leap of faith. Dr. Boer will share how to many have transformed fear into self-motivation. Our audience will hear about many of his students who have become dynamic business leaders with out of the box thinking.  He will also give input on approaching venture capitalists and seeking funding options for start ups.


On February 1, 2016, I will share at Vanderbilt my "boots on the ground" experiences with Dr. Boer's students and why I believe firmly in not letting others "no" determined my steps.

This show is for self-starters who have taken that leap of faith and need a little motivation to stay focused!

More About Germain Boer 

Germain Böer is an innovator in all that he does. His courses use technology and creative assignments that challenge students to think, and feature speakers who have created unusual companies. He also conducts experiential learning programs that transform students into self-driven entrepreneurs.

After working for Arthur Andersen & Co., the Institute of Management Accountants., and two universities, Prof. Böer joined The Owen School in 1977 as a professor of management accounting, Since that time, he has initiated numerous entrepreneurship activities at Owen, including an annual entrepreneurship conference; student sessions with venture capitalists; and a new course, "Adventures in Entrepreneurship," in which Owen students learn how to start a new venture by working directly with entrepreneurs. Prof. Böer also instituted a program that connected students holding graduate degrees in biology with local biotech companies so the students could learn about the business side of the industry while earning an MBA. Further, an alliance with BizTech, a technology incubator in Huntsville, Alabama, allows Owen students to work on projects with technology companies while helping build strong relationships between Owen faculty members and Huntsville entrepreneurs.

He currently serves as an advisor to startup companies in the Nashville area and is a member of the editorial boards of Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, and Strategic Finance. He has provided consulting services for companies such as Chase Manhattan Bank, the National Heart and Lung Institute, General Electric, and Magnatek. Prof. Böer is the past recipient of two Owen teaching awards and in 1999 he was presented with the Most Outstanding Teacher Award by the graduating Executive MBA class. In 2003, the Tennessee District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration named him Small Business Research Advocate of the Year. In addition to his academic service, Prof. Boer served as Interim Dean of the Owen School in 1986-87.

On Saturday, October 18, 2014 tune in to hear the third interview that focuses on the book, Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South by Andrew Maraniss. Perry Wallace, the first African-American to play sports in the Southeastern Conference will share more about his historic decision to play basketball at Vanderbilt University and he will continue sharing with us his thoughts on the attention he has received over the years. Mr. Wallace will also share what it meant to him to receive a Charles Evans Hughes Fellowship while attending Columbia University.

We will also hear a thought provoking conversation between Andrew Maraniss and Dr. Edwin Hines, a graduate of Howard University and a Meharry trained dentist who has read Strong Inside from cover to cover several times. Listen to an engaging exchange of historical facts about Nashville, cultural differences, The Civil Rights Movement, and generational perspectives between Maraniss who has known Perry Wallace twenty-five years and Dr. Hines who arrived at Meharry around the same time Mr. Wallace was beginning his pioneering journey at Vanderbilt.

Capture Big Blue Spirit at Third Annual Legends Weekend

Tennessee State University former football players will help kick off the HBCU's Centennial celebrations with their highly touted, must attend "Legends Weekend". In its third year, The Legends Weekend, is not just a football game for former Big Blue players. Many players use the weekend as an opportunity to meet young players to offer guidance, encouragement, and mentoring. Former players have also donated to the team by helping renovated the football team locker rooms. The Legends Weekend events are sponsored by the TSU's Big Blue Football Alumni Chapter.

In honor of Tennessee State University's Centennial year, TSU's Football Alumni chapter is adding a twist to this year's weekend festivities by playing Vanderbilt University's Football Legends. Players who played from 1950–2008 at both schools are invited to participate in a game of flag football before TSU's Blue and White scrimmage. Former players are inviting you to put on your blue and white(or black and gold) and meet them at "The Hole".

A rooster of twenty players will play for each team. Not a football player? Don't worry, there will be plenty of room for coaching, sideline critiques, and cheering on the players. Bring your school pride and celebrate with the Big Blue Tigers. And yes, as in previous years, Bengay and ice are free to all players!

Tennessee State University's Sustaining the Legacy through Excellence, Resilience and Unity 100th year anniversary will begin April 14-21, 2012. But TSU Football Alumni Chapter encourages everyone to start the celebrations early by joining The Legends Weekend Tiger and Commodore Mixer on Friday, April 13, 2012 starting at 9:00pm at the Maxwell House Hotel. The cost of admittance is $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
