Ms. Santa I want a Bullet Proof Vest and a Doll

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Last year, I skipped Thanksgiving. Totally. I put my Christmas decorations up the day after Halloween and got busy prepping for my eight week stint as my alter ego, Ms. Santa.

Yes, yes, yes say what you want about me but I love going to area schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. My Santa suit draws big smiles. And the stories I am told by the little ones stay with me throughout the New Year. Special requests for Ms. Santa are not usual. I have gotten calls to visit a returning wounded warrior, a visit to someone in poor spirits, or a patient in the hospital. My heart overflows with joy to accommodate every request. Finding gifts year round to take along with me is all part of the fun that comes with extending the Christmas spirit well beyond the holiday season.

As I was winding down the last two weeks of my school visits before children would leave for Christmas break, tragedy struck the Sandy Hook, Connecticut community. By now, we all know the horror that took place. I was dressing to visit a daycare and an after school program when I saw the breaking news. I stood transfixed in front of my television screen, as the first reports began breaking. Who? Why? My mind was racing with questions. Those questions were quickly replaced by prayers asking God to be with every family. I also prayed for our nation.

I refused to look at anymore coverage as I continued my Ms. Santa transformation. I was visiting children the same age of the children at Sandy Hook's Elementary School. What contrasting imagery; me preparing to visit schools to bring joy and fun was just the opposite of  the news coverage of a school that had been visited by evil. I physically shook my head to clear my head of anyone shooting babies. I needed to concentrate on bringing joy to the little ones who wanted my undivided attention while they shared their wish list with me.

The children I visited on that Friday were not aware of what was being discussed on every channel but their teachers were speaking in hush tones. My classes of students laughed and said oohs and aahs as they opened small gifts and took pictures. As they gathered around me to share their Christmas wishes, I hugged them tightly praying silently for their protection.

That evening at home, I wept after hearing the death toll. I was filled with sadness. I remember calling my adult children, my dear little Alex, family, and friends just to hear their voices. "Life is so precious", I remember saying out loud over and over that weekend.

On Monday morning, I was determined I was going to bring Christmas cheer by the truckload with me on my visits as I put on one of my newly cleaned red suit. My first stop that morning was to a first grade classroom. I arrived to see happy faces ready to share their world with me. I barely got my cape off before one beautiful blue eyed pixie touched my arms to get my attention. As I settled into my chair, I reached to give her a hug. As she inspected my pearls and touched my bee pin, she hugged me back tightly. Sensing something was wrong, I said her name softly and asked what would she like for Christmas. She looked up at me and said without blinking, "I would like a bullet proof vest for me and a doll. Can I get a bullet proof vest for her too?" My body stiffen briefly as I was rendered speechless by her request. With this age group, I have learned to be quick on me feet with responses but her wish knocked the wind out of me.  My eyes were stinging from the tears that instantly welled in my eyes as she continued to talk about getting a bullet proof vest.

Company trying to meet demands for children bullet proof vests

I could feel the eyes of all the children on me at that moment waiting for my answer.  I lowered my eyes to fight back my tears. Buying time for my answer, I began to straighten her hair bows and complimented her on her colorful dress. Taking a deep breath, I finally responded, "Your doll will be as beautiful as you and I will make sure to speak to your mom and dad." My words were measured. Ms. Santa is mom also. I glanced at the teacher who was shedding tears. Our eyes locked for a few seconds as she turned to get Kleenex tissue for both of us.

On the first school day after the Sandy Hook tragedy, one child after another talked more about being afraid of the "bad guy" than toys. Throughout the day babies weaved bullet proof vests, back packs that would protect them as they are running away, and can Ms. Santa beat a bad guy with a gun in with their talks about dolls, bikes, trucks and video game wishes. I managed to deflect some questions by wrapping them in my bright red cape, pulling a toy out or giving them a tight hug to comfort them. Children should not worry like this, I mused to myself.

The evil that visited Connecticut had left its mark on children in Middle Tennessee. No matter what area I was in, from Brentwood to North Nashville, the majority of the children I visited that week mentioned Sandy Hook to Ms. Santa. The events in Connecticut cut deep and wide. I worked overtime trying to bring them comfort and joy to ease their minds.

As I began packing away my Christmas suits and holiday decoration this week, I could not help but reflect on my numerous encounters as I waved to, smiled at, laughed with and hugged countless children. I loved every minute of my adventures.

However, I find myself becoming sad when I think of  the first graders who shared their fears with me. I am still troubled by their questions. As I write this post, I hope every one would look for sound solutions to address the violence that has gripped our nation. We can no longer wish for the best. We must find better solutions without feeding into fear and hype.

Our children are our future. Let us make sure they have one.

Duggans' book, Faith and Fitness After 40, approaches health care and exercise from a biblical foundation.  Duggans will talk about the three areas that he feels are necessary for optimum health benefits; resistance weight training, cardio, and nutrition.

Here why others believe Faith and Fitness After 40 "is about developing a lifestyle of fitness, it’s about bending and not breaking, learning how to enjoy yourself by maintaining good health all life long, and not for the sake of just looking good for a vacation. Fitness is more than just a passing fad, it’s a life-style, an avenue where one can vent their anger, and focus it in a positive direction."

“Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Heb 11:1.

Many classify faith as a noun, when in actuality; it serves as both a noun and a verb. Faith and Fitness After 40 focuses on the noun and the verb, meshing the spirituality and the practicality of faith, health and fitness. As a Pastor, I have had many people come to me asking me to pray for preventable health issues, that cannot be solved by prayer alone. Why, because they have no intentions upon applying the corrective action to manifest their prayer request. Yes, faith without works is dead, but as it pertains to your health, faith without work(ing) out, equals death. Faith and Fitness After 40 will show us that the bible is not only a book of faith, but also a book of practical application to coincide with our belief in the word. Jesus paid a lofty price for us to be healthy and I pray this book will help us to begin to experience the health he desired for us to have.

Update: Audio of show can be found here.

Dr. Crouch spoke at the lecture series; Loving God, Loving Others, Serving the World in 2008.  Dr. Crouch message, "Diversity starts at the Top"  will share what his efforts to diversify Georgetown College taught him about his faith, race relations,  and leadership.

On Saturday, December 15, 2012, listen to Dr. Crouch share about his journey to make good on a childhood promise he made during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Hear Dr. Crouch speak about leading his beloved Georgetown College and his attempts to diversify the student body, the faculty, and staff. Dr. Crouch also speaks frankly about why diversity initiatives often fail.

Dr. Crouch's desire to have a more diverse student body made him look at not only the environment of the college, but his community and the daily interactions of leaders he was surrounded by and he could influence. After many encounters that greatly enriched his life personally,  he co-authored a booked in 2010 called What We Love About the Black Church: Can We Get A Witness?  This special broadcast will make you pause as you think deeper about race relation issues  and what it means to you, your school, your place of worship, your corporation, or business to become more diverse in a world that is changing fast.

More About John's Nuts (by John D. Powers)

When I was in grade school, I rode my bike home at lunch time, because I preferred to make my own lunch.  From an early age, I discovered food, and my love for it persists today.

In 2006, I bought a bag of plain pistachios in the Virgin Islands to take on a boat trip. As I was stocking my cooler, it hit me how boring plain pistachios were. I raided my spice cabinet, emptied the pistachios into a bowl, added olive oil, a sprinkle of this and a smidgen of that, and John’s Nuts were born.  My friends and family devoured them. They became my contribution for boat trips, holiday gatherings, sporting events, and movie nights at home.

But it wasn’t until I moved to San Francisco in 2011 that I realized it was time to market my creation. With such a diverse food culture, nearby pistachio farms, and a focus on healthy and whole ingredients, San Francisco was the perfect city to launch my gourmet, savory pistachio company.

John’s Nuts are made with U.S. Extra #1 pistachios from California, first cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, and pure herbs and spices, just like they were on that glorious Caribbean day. We use no preservatives, gums, or artificial ingredients whatsoever.   Your taste buds will love them, and your body will be grateful.

More About Windsor Neckwear

What began in 2008 as a common passion for men's neckwear has become a rapidly growing business venture between Michael McPherson Jr. and Mace Neal III.  The concept for Windsor Neckwear was first thought of on one of many shopping voyages between Michael and Mace.  One day while shopping for a new tie in a popular men's store the duo walked away disappointed in the lack of variety and similarity in a sea of what looked like repetitive ties!  After a brief discussion about the lack luster experience Mike said "we should start our own necktie line" and Mace simply responded "yeah we should".  From that day forward the duo never looked back.  Windsor Neckwear began with a total $80.00 investment between Mike and Mace who purchased fabric and a quick sew necktie pattern.  Initially they began making hand made ties, ascots, and pocket squares.

The plan was to always have their line manufactured on a larger scale so they spent the first year and a half learning the manufacturing business and building capital to develop their first line.  In late 2009 after garnering the support of a manufacturing facility they made their first line of four designs. There were several issues with their first experience but they managed to sell out of all four designs in three weeks!  From that point Windsor Neckwear has expanded to offering a vast array of beautiful neckties each unique in their own way.

To not fall into the pit of "designers block" and creating a basic collection, Windsor Neckwear made it their practice to produce limited quantities per design.  The most they will produce of any one tie in a specific color is 50 pieces, they do this to constantly introduce new products, keep their items exclusive and to always keep the creative juices flowing.  This has worked well for Windsor Neckwear and because of this they always tell their customers "if you see it and like it then get it, because it won't be available long".  Click here for more of their story.

Small Business Roll Call

As a small business owner, I try to support other business owners not only by being a customer but by promoting others to do business with brick and mortars, online, and service based companies.
SBA Administrator Karen Mills, with Yuri Cunza, David Tiller, and Genma Holmes

According to the Small Businesses Administration:
•    Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.
•    Employ half of all private sector employees.
•    Pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll.
•    Generated 65 percent of net new jobs over the past 17 years.
•    Create more than half of the nonfarm private GDP.
•    Hire 43 percent of high tech workers ( scientists, engineers, computer programmers, and others).
•    Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises.
•    Made up 97.5 percent of all identified exporters and produced 31 percent of export value in FY 2008.
•    Produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.

Saturday, November 24, 2012 is officially Small Business Sunday. For the third year, millions of Americans are being encouraged to shop small by purchasing goods and services from small business owners.
Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First celebrated on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.

In 2010 the holiday was conceived and promoted by American Express via a nationwide radio and television advertising campaign. That year Amex bought advertising inventory on Facebook, which it in turn gave to its small merchant account holders, and also gave rebates to new customers to promote the event.
American Express publicized the initiative using social media, advertising, and public relations. At least 41 local politicians and many small business groups in the United States issued proclamations concerning the campaign, which generated more than one million Facebook "like" registrations and nearly 30,000 tweets under the Twitter hashtags #smallbusinesssaturday (which had existed since early 2010) and #smallbizsaturday.

I believe that small business owners must lead the charge by promoting and spending with each other first. To celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship, Living Your Best Life will announce the business owners that leave their company info in the comment section beginning Saturday November 24, 2012 through December 31, 2012 on air to encourage their listeners to spend with small business during the holiday season. It is my way of showing my appreciation for the small business community and helps jump start my "Year of Living and Giving".

Happy Shopping !
