On Saturday, December 27, 2014, tune in to hear from designing woman, Stacey McBride-Irby, creator of Prettie Girls Multicultural Dolls.  Prettie Girls Dolls are now available at retailers around the country and online and  have been a hit with girls long before the Christmas buying season started.

After designing for an international toy company for nearly two decades and launching the successful So In Style Dolls, Stacey took a leap of faith and decided to start her own line, One World Doll Project. Stacey created Prettie Girls to celebrate global diversity. Stacey McBride-Irby and the Prettie Girls have feature been in the media throughout the year as the popularity of the dolls caught fire.

As a child Stacey consistently played with dolls.  Barbie was her favorite.  She loved mixing and matching her clothes, and styling her hair.  Not long after Stacey stopped playing with Barbie™ dolls at the age of 13, she made the decision to enter the fashion world.  She started sketching fashion and going to the library and checking out books about fashion.

Stacey’s father had saved a newspaper article that featured Kitty Black Perkins, a Mattel™ designer.  With the encouragement of her father and her instructor of a fashion computer course at El Camino College, Stacey called Perkins.  In addition to showing her portfolio and resume during the interview, Stacey had to design a Barbie™ fashion.  It was approved and she was hired as an assistant designer which begin her career in the world of toys and doll design.
Stacey was a Project Designer for Mattel™ in El Segundo and was with the company for 15 years.  She is the creator of the So In Style™ line of African-American Barbie™ dolls which were released in 2009. While at Mattell, Stacey was tapped to design the sorority Barbie, Celebrating the Centennial year of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first African-American Greek Sorority, founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.  She designed a one of a kind take on the 1980’s Black Barbie.  She also designed some of the 2010 Barbie career dolls, including Pet Vet Barbie, Rock Star Barbie and Bride Barbie.
Stacey has been interviewed for magazines and newspaper articles such as Ebony, Essence, Heart & Soul, LA’s Beauty Beat, Upscale, Chicago Sun Times and Daily Breeze.  Stacey McBride-Irby made the front cover of Wall Street Journal Personal newspaper.  The So In Style TM dolls have been featured in Barbie and Jet magazine.
Stacey has appeared on CNN Prime News with Richelle Carey “New Barbies Look More Like Black Women”.  And on May 2, 2010 Stacey appeared on BETs My Black is Beautiful, Episode 1:  Celebration of Black Beauty.  She is currently a featured designer in the Barbie Exhibit at The Children’s Museum of  Indianapolis.
Stacey’s motto is, “A happy, inspired childhood creates happy, inspired and powerful women.”  She also loves the Lord with all her heart.  She knows that without God that none of her accomplishments and success would be possible

Join us Saturday, December 13, 2014 to hear from members of the historic match that is often referred to as "the game that changed the South" between two schools, Father Ryan and Pearl Cohn, in 1965. This meeting between the powerhouses was the first ever sporting event in the South between an integrated team and an all African-American team.

Listen to players share how the game changed theirs lives as January 5, 2015 marks the  50th Anniversary of the game. The anniversary coincides with the state of unrest and mounting tensions regarding today's state of race relations in our country.  Hear how a basketball game was an ice breaker to bringing many together to watch a sporting event while the City of Nashville was at the center of protests for racial injustices.

Scheduled to appear on today's show: Walter Fisher and Tony Moorman players from Pearl, Father Ryan's Atletic Director Pat Lawson, whose father was also on the 1965 team and Pat Sanders who played for Father Ryan.

·       The Nashville Sports Council and Comcast Sports Speaker Series “The Game That Changed the South Celebratory Luncheon” sponsored by McDonald’s, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Wildhorse Saloon.

·       An exhibit in the Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Public Library at 3:30 p.m., which will include photographs and memorabilia from the game 50 years ago.

·       The 50th Anniversary Game sponsored by Star Physical Therapy and McDonalds at the Municipal Auditorium. Pre-game events will begin at 5:00 p.m. Tipoff of the girls’ game will be at 6:00 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow at 7:30 p.m.


All of the game day events will be open to the public. The luncheon will feature a panel of guests including Perry Wallace, Pearl Class of 1966 and center on the 1965 team; Andrew Maraniss, author of “Strong Inside:The Story of Perry Wallace”; Jesse Porter, Father Ryan Class of 1964, who in 1963 with Willie Brown became the first African-Americans to integrate sports in the South; and Lyn Dempsey, Father Ryan Class of 1965, who made the winning shot in the game.

Members of both 1965 teams will be part of the activities, including players, coaches, and staff.  They will be introduced at the luncheon and saluted before the boys’ game.  

The 1965 game attracted more than 8,700 fans to the Auditorium—and some reports claim that 10,000 people were actually in attendance—in a match between two of the best teams in the state.  It was the largest crowd ever to see a regular season game.  Dempsey’s basket went through the hoop as the horn sounded, earning Father Ryan a 52-51 victory in a game that lived up to its billing.  Wallace, Walter Fisher and Ted McClain led the Pearl team while Father Ryan was paced by Brown, Champ Hounihan and Pat Sanders.

Glenda F. Newell, M.D. is a board certified physician in Internal Medicine and a media spokesperson whose opinions on new advances in medicine and controversial medical issues have made her a valued medical expert. Dr. Newell has exemplified her exceptional talent to engage audiences in discourses about tough and complicated medical and health topics. Her audiences have included faith-based and professional organizations as well as local, regional and national medical organizations. Having served as a local health commissioner as well as president and secretary of local and regional medical societies, she is a much sought after speaker for youth groups and non - profit organizations that mentor pre-med and medical students. Dr. Newell has served as a medical consultant in various healthcare settings inclusive of ambulatory teaching clinics, private practice and physician foundation clinical practice. She is the Former Medical Director of Primary Care Services for one of the leading and cutting edge non-profit medical organizations within the United States. Dr. Newell has received acclaimed recognition for her work as the healthcare educational consultant for a major international philanthropic organization. She has traveled abroad to Africa where she has assessed methods of supporting the delivery of safe and effective health care to the women.
 
She is a native of North Carolina and a graduate of Miss Porter’s School. She received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati of School of Medicine and her B.S. in Biology from Tufts University. In 2005, Dr. Newell received certification in Physician Leadership in Managing Ambulatory Care from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Newell’s diversified experience practicing medicine in the public and private sector for the past 28 years has given her the inspiration and the vision to co-found her own healthcare consulting business, Newell & Spriggs Consulting. She believes that health literacy; self-empowerment and initiative are required to create a culture of wellness within your work and home environment. One aspect of her company focuses on teaching the tools that will result in effective communication, savvy navigation and appropriate advocacy. Dr. Newell’s personal experiences as an advocate and navigator for her friends and family over the years have affirmed for her the necessity for consumers of health care to acquire these skills.
More About Dr. Brenda B. Spriggs
 
Brenda B. Spriggs, MD MPH MBA has a diverse background in clinical medicine, medical education, and non-profit initiatives. She is a recognized expert in the field of rheumatology and is a seasoned health care professional with a broad range of industry experience as an academic professor, clinician, specialty division chair, health care consultant and lecturer. Dr. Spriggs established a private rheumatology/immunology - focused practice while teaching at Children’s Hospital, San Francisco and the University of California, San Francisco, where she was conferred the status of Clinical Professor Emerita in 2006.
 
As a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco, she served as faculty advisor for the UCSF/N.I.H. rheumatology fellows, liaison for Robert Wood Johnson fellows, and medical school lecturer. As a regional Rheumatology Medical Coordinator, she was charged with implementing the clinical/teaching component of the National Arthritis Act in Northern California and the Central Valley. The two-year pilot project, conducted in clinics throughout the region served as a model for delivery of effective, coordinated rheumatologic care and teaching of residents, community practitioners and allied health professionals. As rheumatology division head at Children’s Hospital, San Francisco, she formalized the division of rheumatology, implementing a robust clinical rotation and facilitating alliances for medical resident training at the University of California, San Francisco. She is the co-author of a number of scientific papers on systemic lupus erythematosus and Reiter’s disease, and has served as consultant and lecturer for the Arthritis Foundation and the Bay Area Lupus Foundation.
Dr. Spriggs’ commitment to improving access to timely, quality medical care for health care consumers goes beyond the institutions she has served during her professional clinical career. She has demonstrated her passion for quality health care by serving on numerous health-related boards and has served on an international level as Citizen Ambassador for the Gore/Mbeki prototype delegation of the People to People International program in South Africa. She is the co-founder of Newell & Spriggs Consulting, LLC, a healthcare company dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of patients and all consumers in the healthcare marketplace. The services include health care coaching, advocacy, and workplace wellness programs, customized to increase workforce engagement and productivity.
