The Essence editor really NAILED it! Its right up there with the statement; "African-Americans cannot be racist because we don't control any institutions that perpetuate it. Ours is personal preference". These urban uber-legends hurt those who hold to it and those that choose to believe them. Pining over people making good business decisions on performance and calling it bad when hiring someone that does not have obvious African descent is so sophomoric.
